Fajita Seasoning

An easy homemade fajita seasoning using simple herbs and spices.

Spices laid in a bowl to make a Fajita Seasoning

FAJITA FRIDAY

Yeah, so I made that up, but there is such a thing as Taco Tuesday so why not Fajita Fridays?

Fajitas are such a fun thing to eat. The fillings all laid out in bowls or platters, so you can help yourself and pile them high.

How much you fill them depends on how brave you are and perhaps how much of a mess you are likely to get into.

FAJITA SEASONING

Fajita seasoning is argubaly the most important part of the fajita.

Without that kick and warmth from the seasoning, they just wouldn't be something special to be savoured.

You can of course buy sachets of seasoning in a supermarket, but you could also make your own.

HOMEMADE FAJITA SEASONING

Homemade fajita seasoning is easy to make and once it's made you can keep it in a jar or tub until you need it again.

It's a mixture of spices, dried herbs and salt.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TACO SEASONING AND FAJITA SEASONING

To be honest, there really isn't much difference between taco seasoning and fajita seasoning. You can swap them about.

It seems to be a very slight difference. Onion and garlic is added to fajita powder, but when you make tacos, you cook your main ingredient with fresh onions and garlic.

Don't worry about it, you can use this spice mix for both.

HOW TO STORE FAJITA SEASONING

You can make a batch of fajita seasoning and keep it for up to 6 months.

If you will be using it within a few weeks, just keep it in a small tub, but if you are keeping it for longer it is best kept in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid.

Make sure the tub or jar are completely dry before adding the spice mix.

Once you have made it, to keep it in best condition store it in a dark, cool cupboard, away from heat.

This recipe makes a small batch of spice, enough for one or two families meals, but you can scale the recipe up and make a bigger batch.

  6. I usually buy the packet mix, but I am going to save this recipe in case I don't have a packet. I have everything on my spice rack apart from the garlic salt and I could always use fresh garlic. Hope you and your family are well. Jill

    1. If you make tacos or fajitas regularly, it is a good idea to make up batch and keep it in a jar in your store cupboard, then you just need to reach for it as you need it. It will work out much cheaper too.

  12. Cool. Always wondered what fajita and taco seasonings were. Turns out, it's pretty much what I use for many of my Mexican dishes, only I use fresh garlic and onion. Love a good Mexican.
